Why do we allow ourselves to become overly stressed, expecially during the holidays? From MedicineNet.com, the definition of stress given is:
In a medical or biological context stress is a physical, mental, or emotional factor that causes bodily or mental tension. Stresses can be external (from the environment, psychological, or social situations) or internal (illness, or from a medical procedure). Stress can initiate the “fight or flight” response, a complex reaction of neurologic and endocrinologic systems.
As you can see, stress is a major problem. Yet during holidays or big events, we can sometimes allow ourselves to become overly stressed. One cause could be that you have company coming for dinner during the holidays and you want to put out a huge spread. Cudos for wanting to do that, however, if you are like me and have a full time job and unfortunately have to work until the very last minute, then begin the process of food preparation, being the best Suzy Homemaker isn’t always practical.
One way to help alleviate all that stress is to assign duties to your family members. Children can be a great help. If you are having a problem with them not eating certain foods, perhaps helping you and seeing the process will tempt your little ones to be a little more experimental with food because they helped.
How about assigning a dish to your guests? This is a good way to try recipes that are their family favorites that you could possibly incorporate into your menu in the future.
Another way, something that our household adopted last year was to postpone Thanksgiving until the following day to accommodate family members that couldn’t be with us on the actual holiday. I have to say, this was probably one of the most stress free holidays I have had in a very long time.
Unfortunately, sometimes stress can be brought on by the loss of a friend or loved one or even your family pet. Last year, a week before Christmas I had to put one of my elderly cats to sleep. Although stressful, I am grateful her passing was quick and gentle.
A few ways to deal with this stress is to get a good night’s rest, relaxation techniques, meditation and doing your best to have a positive attitude. Other ways to alleviate stress is to take a walk or some other form of exercise. It helps to clear my head and I have a better perspective about things. Take up a hobby, travel and do the things you love that give you peace. Sounds like a dream, but it can be your reality
